Shot blasting application

Shot peening & stress relief

Shot peening is a controlled shot blasting machine process: the same impact that cleans steel can also put a compressive layer into springs, gears and highly loaded parts.

What this application is

Shot peening & stress relief with a shot blasting machine

Shot peening and stress relief use a shot blasting machine with tightly controlled media, intensity and coverage to induce compressive residual stress in the surface of a component.

Unlike cleaning, the aim is not to strip scale. It is to improve fatigue life, resistance to cracking and surface integrity on springs, gears, shafts and other parts that see cyclic load.

Intensity (Almen), coverage and shot size are specified. Table, hanger and dedicated peening setups are used when the drawing calls for peening rather than a general blast.

  • Longer fatigue life
  • Documented process
  • Critical-part confidence

Why it matters

How this application is useful

A shot blasting machine earns its place on the line when this process cuts rework, hits a spec, or replaces slow manual prep.

Longer fatigue life

Compressive stress at the surface delays crack start on cyclically loaded parts.

Documented process

Almen strips and coverage checks turn peening into a repeatable production step, not a visual blast.

Critical-part confidence

Springs, gears and highly loaded components can be processed to a written spec.

Cleaning plus peening options

Some lines clean first, then peen, with a media change on related blasting equipment.

After heat treatment

Peening restores surface integrity on parts that come out of quench and temper.

Less crack risk at notches

Compressive stress is most useful at fillets, holes and other stress raisers.
