Introduction of Sand Blasting Machine

Sand Blasting Machine

The method used for surface treatment is called sand blasting. By using this method, we can improve the mechanical properties of any type of material. It possesses a long service life and low maintenance requirements. With the help of a Sand blasting Machine, we can alter the hardness, texture, and microstructure of the material. In machinery production plants, surface treatment or preparation is an extensively used process. It is commonly used in moderate and low operational services. It enhances the mechanical properties and fatigue life of the material. It works as a surface cleaner, removes typical sand particles and grit substances, deburrs, and coats aero engine parts. In this process, small angular and spherical particles are thrown out by compressed air or mechanical high-speed rotating wheels or pumps. It cleans surfaces by throwing harsh material at a high-voltage system. It is used in automotive restoration, shipbuilding, and metal finishing industries before painting, coating, and welding.

Working Principles Of Sand Blasting Machine

The sand blasting machine works on the method of using compressed gas and pressurised liquid at high pressure with coarse thrust. There are many types of words used for sand blasting machines, like bead blasting machine, shot blasting machine, etc. In this process, sand is blown at very high pressure with the help of compressed gas or liquid, resulting in a higher velocity that passes through the sand blasting nozzle.

Operational Components:

  • Loading Coarse Material: Loading harsh material like sand, glass beads, oxides, etc, .in a blasting pot. The pot is pressurized with compressed air or vacuum.
  • Air Compressor: A mechanical device that is used for increasing the air pressure by decreasing its volume. It generates the force that is needed to throw the harsh components at high speed. Because compressed air alone is not sufficient to carry forward the coarse media.
  • Air and Coarse Material Mixing: The air and coarse material are being mixed into the blasting chamber of the blasting machine. Further, the mixture is forced into the blast hosepipe.
  • Blast Nozzle: It helps in creating the right trajectory path for the blast function by controlling the pressure and velocity. But in this process, it is important to use the right size of tungsten carbide nozzle for maximum productivity.
  • Cylinder: It automatically controls the opening and closing of the blasting pot during the process. It allows material to mix with compressed air at the right time. For safety purposes, it automatically shuts off the blasting process when the blasting process is out of control.
  • Pressure Gauge and Regulator: The Pressure Gauge measures the air pressure inside the blasting pot and ensures the correct pressure for the process. It detects the surge in pressure that would affect the performance.

The pressure regulator is working for the adjustment and controlling the output air pressure of the compressor. It maintains the consistency of input air pressure at a desired level.

  • Water Separator or Air Dryer: It prevents congestion of air by removing moisture from the compressed air.
  • Safety Control System: It is a remote control system that allows the operator to turn on or off the blasting process from the nozzle position. In case of any type of emergency, the blast process would be turned off with immediate effect.

Types Of Sand Blasting Machine

There are various types of sand blasting machines used in different types of fields based on the required operational scale, coating blaster, finishing surface, etc.

  • Portable Blasters: It is a very easy-to-use blaster that can be used in small to medium fieldworks and maintenance work. The Portable sand blasting machine is easily movable to use on-site.It is very useful to cleaning rust, coating or paint removal, and small surface finishing processes.
  • Cabinet Type Blaster: It is an enclosed system that is used for small components for controlling the indoor blasting process.
  1. Suction Blast Cabinet: These are the cheap and easily available cabinet that uses a vacuum to throw out the substances. Suction blasting cabinet contains mainly three parts, a sandblasting gun with two hose pipe.
  2. Pressure Blast Cabinet: These are more efficient and faster than suction blasters. Pressure blasting cabinet contains a large container comprising silica under high pressure. It uses pressurized air for the highest intensity. It is generally used in the cleaning of automotive parts, jewelry cleaning, equipment precision, etc.
  • Automated Blasters: These are the completely automatic working blasters. It is mainly used in high-volume industrial blasting. Parts of the automatic sand blasting machine are moved through a machine on a conveyor or rotary table. It is controlled by a PLC or a Programmable system. It is used generally in mass production, surface cleaning, and finishing in factories.
  • Dustless Blasters: It is also known as we sand blaster. Water and coarse material are mixed before starting the blasting process. It is environment-friendly. It reduces temperature and dust. It is commonly used in Rust removal, cleaning of delicate surface areas, and cleaning dust.
  • Blast Room System: It is a very large enclosed room that is operated manually. It is operated with consideration of full safety measures. The Sand Blasting Room is used for very heavy and large components. In this type of blasting, including dust collection, ventilation, and an airy environment. It is mainly used in Aerospace, shipbuilding, and large metal components.
  • Robotic Blasters: In this type of blaster, robotic arms are used for the blasting process based on a programming setup. It is a higher industrial application. It is used in the field of Aerospace, the Automobile industry, where accuracy matters a lot.

Applications of the Sand Blasting Machine

  • Automotive & Manufacturing: Sand blasting is ideally used for vehicle machinery, aerospace, and ships. It efficiently disposes of the old paint, hard coating from metals, and decay using abrasives like steel grit, aluminum oxide, or garnet.

- Used in cleaning of bold components from forged parts, deburring and preparing the parts for electroplating, powder coating, and anodizing.

- Cleaning molds and removing scale from the parts that are treated by the high-heat procedure.

- Cleaning engine blocks, gears, bearings, shafts, vehicle panels, and castings before repairing or welding for a smooth surface.

  • Aviation & Aerospace: Paint removal from the aircraft’s body and preparation of the turbine blades by the use of gentle media like glass beads, ceramic media, plastic media, etc.

- Cleaning precisely during the work of refurbishment of parts.

- Improving the surface for the bonding of adhesives

  • Shipbuilding & Marine: Portable blast systems are commonly used in marine activities. -Old hard coatings of ships were removed by steel shot blasting or copper slag blasting.

-Cleaning hulls, decks, and tanks of larger ships. -Removing marine growth from ships.

  • Power Generation & Heavy Industries: Cleaning of big boilers, heavy parts of the turbine, heat exchangers, and tubes of condensers. It throws out the harsh deposits and combats corrosion.
